Steve Buchanan is a principal leading Booz Allen’s Civil Smart, Safe, and Sustainable Infrastructure business. He brings more than 35 years of experience specializing in developing innovative management approaches and implementation strategies to assist government and private sector organizations with achieving optimal infrastructure, environmental, and safety program performance.
His multidisciplinary delivery teams provide critical thought leadership and innovation to address national and international challenges to promote the protection of human health and the environment. Key engagements have included policy analysis and forecasting, public and private sector environmental management system and safety and health management systems support, enterprise-wide safety program assessments, sustainability planning processes, business case analyses for environmental stewardship investments, and issue-specific programmatic risk assessments (e.g., climate impacts, energy security). By building on traditional approaches with the infusion of cutting-edge technologies and advanced analytics, Steve has helped transform the positive impact and value of the firm’s infrastructure resilience, environmental health, and sustainability services.
Prior to joining Booz Allen, Steve was an environmental protection specialist with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for more than 6 years, serving as a field environmental scientist, bench chemist and methods development specialist, environmental compliance inspector, contributor to Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act regulatory standards, and manager of the EPA’s internal environmental compliance program.
Steve earned a B.S. in biology from Old Dominion University, with graduate studies in technology management at the University of Maryland. He is a member of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and is also certified as a project management professional.
